He sailed with Asha Greyjoy's grandsire's grandsire, the legendary Dagon Greyjoy, whose name was given to Asha's cousin Dagon the Drunkard. Old women on Fair Isle still frightened their grandchildren with tales of Lord Dagon and his men. Erik's past reputation as a roaring giant, fearsomely strong, fiercely loyal, and utterly without fear, stands in stark contrast to his present condition: he is so old and infirm that he can barely leave his chair. Asha Greyjoy reflects that he is "like to die the first time he tries to do his duty as a husband."

Role in the Kingsmoot and Marriage

At the kingsmoot on Old Wyk, where the ironborn captains chose a new king, Asha wounded Erik's pride by putting her own name forward. After the Crow's Eye, Euron Greyjoy, was chosen, he used the marriage as a political stroke. "My wayward niece needs taming," Euron was reported to have said, "and I know the man to tame her."
